HaptiC-Binder: A Software Algorithm For Touching and Feeling Arbitrary 3-dimensional objects in Virtual Environments

HaptiC-Binder is a set of software algorithms that works with a haptic interface and enables the user to touch and feel 3-dimensional polygon-based objects in virtual environments. A haptic interface is a device that enable manual interaction with virtual environments or teleoperated remote systems. They are employed for tasks that are usually performed using hands in the real world, such as manual exploration and manipulation of objects (Srinivasan, 1995). Force-relating haptic interface devices generate computer-controlled forces to convey to the user a sense of natural feel of the virtual environment and objects within it. In this regard, HaptiC-Binder computes these forces and enables the user to touch and feel arbitrary shaped 3D virtual objects in a synthetic environment as if they exist.
